Squarespace to Shopify
Migration

Graduate from a website builder to a real commerce engine. Keep the design polish, gain every feature serious D2C needs.

Why brands leave Squarespace

The four reasons we hear every week.

01

Commerce features built for hobbyists

Squarespace Commerce is brilliant for a gallery-quality site. But serious D2C needs: advanced discounts, bundles, subscriptions, abandoned cart on every plan, product personalization, B2B. Most of these are limited or absent on Squarespace.

02

Checkout and payment restrictions

Squarespace locks you into Stripe, PayPal, or Square. No alternate gateways, no Shop Pay, no custom checkout logic. In regions where local payment methods drive conversion, this is a 5–15% revenue tax.

03

Limited third-party app ecosystem

Squarespace has no real app store. Integrations happen via code injection, Zapier, or email-based workflows. Shopify has 8,000+ apps covering every commerce workflow you'll ever need.

04

Product catalog and variant limits

Squarespace caps variants at 100 per product and has limited support for complex product relationships (bundles, grouped, configurable). Once you outgrow this, you've outgrown Squarespace.

What transfers

Nothing gets left behind.

A real migration is more than products and orders. We preserve the long tail — redirects, meta tags, customer data, historical orders — so your team wakes up on launch day to a faster store, not a broken one.

Every Squarespace object is mapped to its Shopify equivalent during the audit phase. You sign off on the mapping before we touch production.

  • Products, variants, SKUs and inventory levels
  • Product images, alt tags, descriptions and metafields
  • Collections, categories and navigation structure
  • Customers, order history and saved addresses
  • Historical orders with line items and fulfilment status
  • Discounts, gift cards and loyalty balances
  • SEO: URL redirects (301s), meta tags and structured data
  • Blog posts, pages and static content

The process

How a Squarespace to Shopify migration actually runs.

01

Data audit

We inventory every entity in your current store — products, customers, orders, URLs — and map them 1:1 to Shopify objects. You get a complete migration blueprint before any work starts.

02

Staged import

We import everything into a Shopify development store. No production impact. You validate the data, we fix gaps, we sign off together.

03

Headless build

While the data migration runs, we build your new Next.js storefront connected via the Shopify Storefront API. Design, components, performance — all production-grade.

04

SEO cutover

301 redirects from every old URL to the new one. XML sitemap, schema markup, canonicals. Search rankings stay intact.

05

Zero-downtime launch

DNS change at a low-traffic window. Your old store stays online until the new one is live and verified. If anything goes wrong, rollback is a DNS flip.

06

30-day support

We stay on-call for the first month. Bugs, tweaks, analytics questions — covered.

FAQ

Squarespace migration questions, answered.

Can we keep our Squarespace design?
We rebuild the site in Next.js, using your Squarespace design as the visual reference. The result is typically indistinguishable from the original — but with full custom code, 2–3× faster load times, and no Squarespace block-system limits.
Will our Squarespace member/customer data migrate?
Customers, orders, and product reviews migrate cleanly. Squarespace member areas (paid content, courses) don't have a direct Shopify equivalent — we either replace them with a Shopify-compatible tool (Thinkific, Uscreen) or keep that piece on Squarespace if it's load-bearing.
What about our Squarespace blog and SEO?
All blog posts, authors, tags, and images migrate to Shopify blogs or a headless CMS. 301 redirects from every Squarespace URL to the Shopify equivalent protect rankings. The new site is faster and structurally more SEO-friendly than Squarespace out of the box.
How long does Squarespace to Shopify migration take?
Data migration is 1–2 weeks for a typical catalog. A full headless Next.js rebuild adds 6–8 weeks on top. Plan for 7–10 weeks total from kickoff to a zero-downtime launch.
